The practical next step

Look at the tread.

NHTSA recommends monthly tread checks. Tires should be replaced at 2/32 of an inch of tread; damage or uneven wear also needs attention.

From NHTSA

Check pressure cold.

Use the pressure on your vehicle’s tire-information label or in its owner’s manual. Check monthly, when the tires are cold.

From the National Weather Service

Avoid floodwater.

Good tires do not make a flooded road safe. Never drive into floodwater or around road-closure barriers.

Additional guidance: NHTSA tire safety · National Weather Service. Follow vehicle and tire manufacturer guidance for condition and age. Our summary covers Victor’s tire-safety contribution; other incidents in the full report are separate.
