Your Tesla was hit. You exchanged information, took photographs and reported the accident. Now you are looking at a damaged vehicle and trying to answer three questions:
Who is paying for the repair?
Where should I take my Tesla?
And what happens if the damage is worse than it looks?
The answers are not always as simple as the insurance app makes them appear.
If you were not at fault, you may want the other driver’s insurance company to handle the claim. If that carrier is still investigating, you may consider using your own collision coverage instead. And whether the claim involves Tesla Insurance or another company, the first estimate may only include the damage visible in photographs.
At Universal Motorcars, we help Las Vegas Tesla owners navigate both the repair and insurance sides of an accident. We repair Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck vehicles at both our Spring Mountain Road and West Post Road locations.
Here is what you should know before deciding what to do next.
Start With Safety, Not the Insurance Estimate
A Tesla may still turn on and move after an accident, but that does not automatically make it safe to drive.
Do not drive the vehicle if you notice smoke, unusual heat, a strong chemical odor, leaking fluid, a damaged wheel or tire, difficulty steering or a high-voltage, airbag or restraint-system warning.
You should also be cautious if a body panel is loose, a door will not close properly or the vehicle was hit underneath. Damage around a wheel can affect the suspension or alignment even when the exterior damage appears relatively minor.
A photograph cannot confirm that a collision-damaged Tesla is safe to drive. When there is any doubt, arranging transportation is safer than taking a chance.
Call either Universal Motorcars location and tell us what happened. We can help you determine the most appropriate next step.

Which Insurance Company Should Handle the Repair?
This depends on who caused the accident, whether liability has been accepted and which coverages are available.
When the other driver was at fault
You can generally present a property-damage claim to the responsible driver’s insurance company. This is known as a third-party claim.
If the carrier accepts liability and confirms that coverage is available, it may pay for the accepted accident-related repairs, subject to the responsible driver’s policy limits. Because you are not using your own collision coverage, your personal policy deductible generally does not apply.
Many not-at-fault Tesla owners prefer this route for that reason.
The challenge is that the other driver’s insurance company may need time to investigate. It may need to contact its insured, review the accident and confirm that the policy was active before accepting responsibility.
Even when fault appears obvious, the body shop cannot make that decision for the insurance company. We can document the damage, provide an estimate and answer repair-related questions, but the carrier must make its own liability and coverage determination.
When you use your own collision coverage
If the other carrier is taking too long—or if fault is disputed—you may have the option of using your own collision coverage.
This is a first-party claim. Your insurance company handles the covered vehicle damage under your policy and may later pursue reimbursement from the responsible party or insurer through subrogation.
Using your own coverage can sometimes move the repair process forward sooner, but your deductible will normally apply. If your insurer later recovers its payment, it may also attempt to recover your deductible. Reimbursement and timing are not guaranteed.
Before choosing this route, ask your insurer:
- Will my deductible apply?
- Has the other carrier accepted liability?
- Will you pursue subrogation?
- Does my policy include rental coverage?
- How will I be notified if my deductible is recovered?

When Tesla Insurance is involved
Tesla Insurance may be your insurance company, or it may insure the other driver involved in the accident.
If it covers your vehicle and you use your collision coverage, you are making a first-party claim. If Tesla Insurance covers the driver who caused the accident, you may be dealing with it as a third-party claimant.
The name of the carrier does not change the basic repair process. The important questions are whose policy is being used, whether liability has been accepted and what coverage is available.
Hit-and-run or uninsured-driver accidents
If the responsible driver left the scene or did not have insurance, the available repair coverage depends on your policy.
Report the accident promptly, preserve photographs or video and obtain a police-report number when appropriate. Ask your insurance company which coverage applies and whether you will owe a deductible.
Universal Motorcars can inspect and document the vehicle while coverage is being reviewed, but repair authorization and payment responsibility should be clear before work begins.
Can You Choose Your Own Tesla Repair Shop?
Yes.
Nevada law gives both insured drivers and claimants the right to select a licensed body shop. An insurance company may recommend a particular facility, but it cannot require you to have the vehicle repaired there.
Tesla Insurance also states that customers may choose any repair shop.
Choosing the insurance company handling the claim and choosing the shop repairing your Tesla are two separate decisions.
You can bring your Tesla to Universal Motorcars whether:
- You are using the responsible driver’s insurance
- You are using your own collision coverage
- Tesla Insurance is handling the claim
- Liability is still being investigated
- You have not received an insurance estimate
- You are considering paying for the repair yourself
You do not have to wait for an insurer to select a shop for you.
The First Estimate May Not Show the Complete Damage
One of the most common questions we hear is:
“Why is the shop’s estimate higher than the estimate from the insurance company?”
Usually, the two estimates were written with different information.
An insurer may prepare its first estimate from photographs. It can include the damage that is visible, but the estimator cannot see through a bumper cover or inspect every component underneath the vehicle.
Once the Tesla reaches the shop and the damaged area is opened for inspection, more may be found.
A bumper impact could involve broken retainers, damaged mounting points, wiring or components behind the cover. A collision near a wheel may also involve the suspension, steering or alignment. Damage underneath the vehicle may not be visible in the original photographs at all.
The first estimate is not necessarily wrong. It may simply be incomplete because the full damage was not accessible yet.

What Is an Insurance Supplement?
When additional accident-related damage is discovered, the shop prepares a supplement.
A supplement may include photographs, updated part information, diagnostic findings and repair operations that were not included in the first estimate. It is submitted to the insurance company for review.
A supplement does not automatically mean the customer owes the difference. It means the insurer is being asked to evaluate newly documented damage or repair requirements.
At Universal Motorcars, we prepare the supporting documentation and communicate directly with the adjuster. We answer repair questions, submit revisions and follow up as the supplement is reviewed.
The insurance company still controls its coverage and payment decisions. If something is declined, disputed or potentially the customer’s responsibility, we explain it before the related work is authorized.
Tesla Accident Damage Can Go Beyond the Body
Good collision repair is not only about making the exterior look right again.
Depending on where the Tesla was hit, the repair may also involve the suspension, steering, alignment, underbody, diagnostic systems or driver-assistance technology.
This does not mean every Tesla collision damages the high-voltage battery. It also does not mean every bumper repair automatically requires ADAS calibration. Those statements are too broad.
The correct inspection depends on the actual vehicle:
- Where did the impact occur?
- How severe was it?
- Was a wheel or suspension area involved?
- Did the vehicle begin pulling or driving differently?
- Are new warning messages present?
- Were cameras or related components affected or removed?
- Was the underbody struck?
The repair plan should be based on what happened to your Tesla—not a generic checklist.
Why Tesla Owners Choose Universal Motorcars
Tesla vehicles are a regular part of our workload at both Universal Motorcars locations.
We repair accident damage on Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck vehicles. Our team handles cosmetic body damage as well as collisions involving mechanical, suspension, alignment or diagnostic concerns.
That experience has taught us something important: a Tesla accident does not always stay within one department.
A vehicle may need body and paint work, but it may also need suspension repair or alignment. A damaged component may need to be removed before hidden damage can be seen. Certain repairs may require scanning or ADAS calibration before the vehicle is ready to leave.
Universal Motorcars combines those capabilities at one facility.
Collision and mechanical repair under one roof
Our collision and mechanical teams can work together on the same vehicle. At both locations, we provide Tesla collision and auto body repair, along with:
- Paint matching and refinishing
- Structural repairs
- Mechanical diagnostics
- Suspension and steering repair
- Wheel alignment
- Pre-repair and post-repair scanning
- ADAS calibration when required
If the accident affects more than the exterior panels, the vehicle does not automatically need to be passed among several unrelated shops.
Experience with first- and third-party claims
We regularly assist customers using their own collision coverage as well as not-at-fault drivers pursuing claims through another party’s insurer.
Our team works with Tesla Insurance and other major carriers. We prepare estimates, document additional damage, submit supplements and communicate with adjusters about the repair.
We cannot control how quickly an insurance company accepts liability or approves a supplement. What we can do is provide clear documentation, follow up on the repair file and keep you informed.
Clear answers without the runaround
Customers should not have to call repeatedly just to learn whether their vehicle is waiting for a part, an insurance response or additional authorization.
We explain where the repair stands and what needs to happen next. If the insurer approves something, we tell you. If an item remains under review, we explain that too.
You should understand the repair—not feel locked out of it.
Training and professional repair standards
Universal Motorcars is an I-CAR Gold Class recognized and OEC-certified repair facility. Our team includes I-CAR Platinum and ASE professionals.
Those credentials support the broader collision and mechanical capabilities we bring to Tesla repairs, but credentials alone are not what customers see when they pick up their vehicles.
They see the panel fit. They see the paint finish. They feel whether the vehicle drives correctly. And they remember whether the shop kept them informed.
That is where the real trust is earned.
How Long Does Tesla Accident Repair Take?
No honest shop can give an exact completion date before the vehicle is fully inspected.
Repair time depends on:
- The location and severity of the damage
- Whether hidden damage is discovered
- How quickly liability and coverage are confirmed
- Insurance supplement review
- Parts availability
- Body, structural or mechanical work required
- Paint and refinishing
- Alignment, diagnostics or calibration
A small cosmetic repair will not follow the same timeline as an accident involving multiple panels, suspension work and insurance supplements.
We will tell you what stage the vehicle is in and what may be affecting the timeline. If we are waiting for a part or insurance decision, you should know that.
Will You Only Pay a Deductible?
It depends on which claim is paying for the repair.
If you use your own collision coverage, your deductible will generally apply. If the responsible driver’s insurer accepts liability and pays the third-party claim, your personal collision deductible generally does not apply.
There may still be disagreements involving coverage, policy limits, parts or particular repair operations. Before moving forward, you should understand:
- Which insurance company is handling the repair
- Whether liability has been accepted
- Whether a deductible applies
- What the insurer approved
- What remains under review
- Whether anything could become your responsibility
We do not make blanket promises about what an insurance company will pay. We review the actual claim and explain the situation before repairs proceed.
